NEW YORK With fewer bodies in movie theaters and consumers migrating en masse to digital formats, Hollywood studios are understandably keen to reach their market in new, hopefully more effective ways. Although virtual worlds have a spotty record so far, some studios clearly see great potential in these environments for both promotion and distribution of their output.
In April, Viacom’s Paramount Digital Entertainment signed a partnership agreement with Makena Technologies, making thousands of movie clips from the Paramount movie library available on There.com, an online virtual world. Visitors who purchase the clips can use them to communicate with others by having their avatar “speak” lines from movies while the actual clip plays in a small window. Links allow users to purchase DVDs of the featured movies.
Sony and Warner Bros. have both struck deals with Gaia Online, a hybrid virtual world and social network. The deals make available selected television programs from Sony’s library and films from the Warner Bros. archive. The agreements also saw Sony and Warner Bros. put some money into Gaia. A representative from Time Warner, the parent of Warner Bros., said the move falls in line with company strategy: to invest in companies with “great potential.”
Lewis Henderson, svp of the digital media business at the William Morris Agency, said, “Film companies are seeing that these virtual worlds are places that young people go to and spend a lot of time in. They are attractive as new networks, new destinations, new eyeballs for them.”
For Derek Broes, svp of the new business group at Paramount Digital Entertainment, assessing the virtual landscape wasn’t difficult.
“We don’t look at it as how many people are there. We look at them as interesting growth platforms — and we feel that there’s promise in it. You have to get involved, you have to explore and invest and go where the consumer is. We can no longer sit back and say we are going to put our content here and expect the consumer to follow,” he said.

Frank Alvarado watches the TV as the jockeys get a break to watch the Belmont Stakes at Golden Gate Fields on Saturday June 7, 2008 in Albany, Calif. In the Belmont Stakes, Big Brown was never in contention. (Gregory Urquiaga/Contra Costa Times)
ALBANY — David Lopez, shirtless, chewed on a nail. Frank Alvarado, in shiny boots, leaned forward in his chair.
Something with Big Brown wasn’t right, and the group of jockeys, eyes trained on the TV screen between races in their lounge at Golden Gate Fields, knew it quickly.
“He’s not happy. You can see that. He’s pinched, the ears. He’s like, mad,” Alvarado said as hope for the first Triple Crown winner since 1978 fled the room, just as it did from a grandstand swelling with anticipation Saturday. “It’s very sad. Everybody wanted to see it.”
Former jockey Paul Nicolo called it early — “No fire today. He’s done” — before lamenting the outcome.
“He’s as good a horse as I’ve ever seen. He’s what the game needs is a horse like this. I just wish (the jockey) didn’t pull him up.”
The quiet in the room after the Belmont Stakes told a tale of history unclaimed. It also told the story of a sport struggling to renew its fan base, with tracks such as Bay Meadows closing and, since the death of the Kentucky Derby runner-up this year, loud accusations of cruelty from animal rights activists.
A dominating, born-to-run horse like Big Brown, a legend in waiting, was a shot in the arm, fans and jockeys agreed. And on Saturday, his bid for the biggest prize in the Sport of Kings drew about 6,300 eager fans — 42 percent more than for last year’s Belmont, according to Golden Gate Fields officials — and a slew
of party groups rarely seen these days in Northern California racing.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Federal, state and consumer discomfort with Google Inc, Yahoo Inc and other companies tracking consumers’ online behavior could slow the growth of Internet advertising, a financial services research group said in a report on Wednesday.
The organization, Stanford Group Co, cited moves by the state legislatures in New York and Connecticut to ensure consumers’ privacy online; the Federal Trade Commission’s call for industry self-regulation; and complaints by lawmakers as signs that the advertising model may face some controls.
Further, a survey by research firm TNS Global found that 42 percent of Internet users would opt out of online tracking if they could, the Stanford Group said.
“We think the growing government scrutiny is likely to make it easier for consumers to opt out of behavioral tracking, which in turn will reduce the number of web surfers that can be reached through behavioral advertising,” the group said in a statement.
“The momentum toward disclosure/opt-out has negative implications for the rapid growth of online advertising,” the group said.
The move toward privacy could hurt Google and Yahoo as well as Comcast Corp, Verizon Communications Inc and other companies moving into the Internet advertising market.

Shortly after it became obvious Senator John McCain was going to get the Republican nomination for President of the United States, self-proclaimed “conservatives” and blow-hards like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Anne Coulter, and Laura Ingraham began to trash McCain, pronounce he wasn’t conservative, and say they wouldn’t vote for him. I guess I forgot these people own the term “conservative.”
It was a real talent for these people (and many others) to show how short-sighted, narrow-minded, and politically pure they are. What would we do without such hard-nosed bullies in our party? Compromise? Heaven forbid!
Fortunately, most of the rhetoric from anti-McCain forces within the G.O.P. has toned down. Though certainly an Obama or Clinton presidency wouldn’t hurt Rush’s ratings (or Anne Coulter’s next book tour for that matter). Like anything associated with politics, if you want to know the reason for something, just follow the money.
But alas, from the grassroots, there are true ideological conservative purists who find it hard to come out of their shells and admit this is not a perfect world. These are the same people who think there are black helicopters standing-by waiting to infringe on our rights to bear arms, allow women to have drive-through abortions at 7-11, and make our second grade school kids read “Jimmy has two dads.” While yes, we should be concerned about the intent underlying the rhetoric of Sens. Clinton and Obama, I don’t think Hillary and Barack are going to be commanding any black helicopters to force any of this upon us. We can thank our Founding Fathers and the Constitution for that.
These grassroots conservative purists not only think they own the definition of what a conservative is, they believe John McCain will sound the death knell of the Republican Party.

For a guy who pocketed between $3 million and $5 million playing blackjack in Las Vegas and Atlantic City casinos, Jeff Ma cuts a decidedly low-roller figure.
The 36-year-old San Francisco resident and former MIT student - who’s the inspiration for the New York Times’ best-seller “Bringing Down the House” and “21,” the Kevin Spacey film opening this weekend - arrived for work last week at his South of Market office wearing flip-flops and shaggy jeans.
He’d just returned from a Vegas weekend, where he spent two nights hanging out with Spacey and pals at the movie’s premiere, and he admitted he was a little partied out.
“Honestly,” Ma said in a relaxed demeanor that would incite jealousy in just about any post-college-aged man, “all this movie stuff - all the interviews and promotion - it’s been way more crazy than the actual card-counting we did in school.”
In the movie, Ma’s character is a reluctant whiz kid recruited by his MIT math professor, played by Spacey, to join a team of card-counters, who develop a system that turns the odds in their favor, betting accordingly to win big.
In reality, Ma was hardly reluctant. He signed on after seeing flyers advertising card-counting seminars around campus, a well-known hobby among undergrads at the Cambridge, Mass., university, he said. His true talent later emerged at the table: Ma was able to play the game based on numbers only, and not make wagering decisions based on unreliable data, such as gut-feelings and emotion, the downfall of any gambler.
Ma’s story (and the secrets of the card-counting system) found a larger audience years later, after he met Wired magazine writer Ben Mezrich at a party in 2000, he said. Ma recalls telling the writer, “I’ve got a great story for you,” starting a three-month process of unloading his memory into Mezrich’s notebook, including a few trips to casinos to demonstrate how the system works.

March Madness is online this year for free.
It’s seems no one is immune from the distraction. CBS Sports is streaming NCAA’s games live, and people are tuning in-whether they are at home or at work.
“I woke up this morning and wondered how I’m gonna’ keep up with the tournament,” Mike Messer said.
It used to be all about the brackets.
“I’m looking at the bracket here on line, studying it diligently,” Lanny Porter said.
Now it’s all about watching the video.
“The first two days are actually my most favorite time to watch the tournament,” said Porter.
Messer’s the boss in his little insurance office, so if he’s watching, he’s not going to slap wrists for anyone else watching the game.
“We’re pretty loose about that, if the phone rings or we got something to do, certainly we’re going to get that done first, but everybody here has a team that they like and there is no problem with them checking in and making sure they are still alive in the tournament, ” said Messer.
They are not the exception-lots of people are tuning in.
The free lure has millions tuning in. A workplace study predicts 37.3 million are in office pools and 1.5 million people will watch the game online.
And those workers will waste as much as 1.7 billion dollars of work time. Despite what the report says, some businesses will still get some work done.
“We’re not so distracted that we might get up and leave and go to a place like home or to the restaurant to watch the game, at least we’re still here in the office and trying to get some stuff done,” said Messer.

Easter is upon us and we’re still surrounded with snowbanks. Upon returning to Cedarville after a wonderful vacation in Sedona, Arizona, I found the sight of snow was a little bit disappointing, but the spring sunshine will soon melt it all away.

Season 2008/09 is expected to be the club’s last playing at the existing Tynecastle as they await ratification from Edinburgh City Council on their planning application for a complete rebuild of the main stand.
Last December, 6000 supporters were canvassed for their views on alternative venues for Hearts to occupy during the redevelopment, which was then estimated to begin during next season. Options put forward included Easter Road, Almondvale and East End Park as well as staying in Gorgie to play in front of the three remaining stands.
This prompted fears of a scramble to secure season tickets due to reduced capacity, however, the Evening News can reveal that the existing main stand will not be demolished before summer 2009, thus allowing Hearts to remain at their spiritual home throughout next season.
Tynecastle currently has 13,500 season ticket holders amongst its 17,400 capacity but that figure could possibly fall for next year as many fans have become disenchanted by on-field events this season.
To encourage supporters to renew, Hearts are offering existing season ticket holders savings of between 11 and 59 per cent compared with next season’s game-by-game prices. Discounts are achieved by renewing through the ‘early bird’ scheme, which runs for the next 11 weeks until Monday, May 5.
Additionally, by purchasing early, certain season ticket holders can benefit from savings of up to ten per cent on last year’s prices.
A Hearts spokesperson said: “Tynecastle has been full or close to capacity for the majority of games once again this season and the loyalty of the fans is unrivalled.
“We are keen to make it as easy as possible, both financially and operationally, for our supporters to renew and we believe that we’ve developed a very good season ticket package. Fans will be able to pick up their season tickets at any time from today and those that renew before 1.00pm on the May 5 will receive the best deals.
