If you’re suffering from Pennsylvania primary fatigue — and who’s not at this point? — your sweet relief will be delivered next week after all the votes have been tallied from Tuesday’s returns.
Viewers at home can always turn off the TV, but for the news professionals covering the campaigns, it’s a busy, down-to-the-wire time. National TV news outlets will be dropping into Pennsylvania, though their city assignments were not clear as of yesterday, in part because the networks are waiting to learn where the candidates plan to be Tuesday night. (Fox News Channel says it will have a correspondent reporting from Pittsburgh, but it hasn’t yet figured out who that will be.)
PBS’s “The NewsHour With Jim Lehrer” (6 p.m. weekdays, WQED) will undoubtedly have the biggest presence in Pittsburgh. Lehrer and crew will move into WQED for two nights of broadcasts Monday and Tuesday, though reports from Pittsburgh will begin airing tonight.
“We haven’t done this in years,” Lehrer said by phone earlier this week of the show’s travel plans. “Pittsburgh is very representative from a political standpoint. There are terrific stories to tell.”
“NewsHour” executive producer Linda Winslow said the broadcast hasn’t traveled often, except for attending the political conventions, since going to a one-anchor format in 1995 after the departure of anchor Robert MacNeil.
Winslow said “The NewsHour” picked Pittsburgh because of WQED’s upgraded high definition facilities and a good relationship with the station. But why Pittsburgh and not Philadelphia, a larger market?
“We do have a contrarian streak in us,” Winslow said. “We figure everyone goes to Philadelphia. That’s the usual image of Pennsylvania. Pittsburgh represents a whole other part of the state. … It’s different to be in Pittsburgh. It’s not the typical place to go for a Pennsylvania story.”
Correspondents Gwen Ifill and Judy Woodruff will join Lehrer in the WQED studio — the program will use the “On Q” backdrop but bring in an anchor desk — and both will file reports from other parts of the commonwealth, with Ifill reporting from the Philadelphia suburbs and Woodruff in Pottsville, Schuylkill County.

According to the Home Office, the presence in the UK of Snoop Dogg, rapper, ex-drug-dealer and writer of the song Serial Killa, was “non-conducive to the public good”.
But now Snoop Dogg - real name Cordozar Calvin Broadus - could be heading back to Britain after the ban was overturned by an immigration appeals judge.
The American star was refused a visa last year after claims that he and five members of his entourage provoked a mass brawl at Heathrow Airport in 2006.
Reports at the time said he lashed out at security staff and threw bottles of spirits through airport windows when asked to leave the British Airways VIP lounge.
Yesterday, however, in yet more bad publicity for British Airways after the Terminal 5 debacle, Judge George Warr ruled that the brawl was “precipitated by decisions made by BA staff and police”.
Far from being Snoop’s fault, Judge Warr said there was no evidence that the rapper had been responsible for any public disorder at all.
He agreed with the conclusions of Nehar Bird, an immigration judge, who ruled in January that the authorities had failed to show that Snoop’s exclusion from Britain would be conducive to the public good.
The Home Office’s appeal against that earlier decision was dismissed yesterday, paving the way for the rapper to re-enter the UK.
It was not Snoop that provoked the fight, a DVD film of the incident showed. In fact, the 36-year-old had been pushed twice by a police officer but did not retaliate. At the time, Judge Warr agreed, the former pimp had been doing no more than “entertaining children”.
Judge Bird noted: “The appellant’s behaviour on the DVD showed him interacting with the public. The children were laughing and generally enjoying either dancing or singing or playing music.”
Snoop’s visa request was turned down on March 23 2007, the day before he was due to join fellow rapper P Diddy in the UK to speak to young black teenagers at an event organised in response to a spate of gang shootings.

CENTRAL OHIO — As the hours before the filing deadline dwindle, NBC 4 reported on the most common and costly mistakes and how to get more time to file.
1. The biggest mistake is not filing a tax return. Delaying payment is going to increase the amount you’ll have to pay later.
2. Triple check that you’ve recorded the correct social security number(s) on your return. A tiny mistake such as that could mean a partial refund until the IRS verifies your information.
3. Starting in 2007, a deduction for cash contributions to a charity is not be allowed unless you have a bank record, such as a cancelled check, or a receipt — regardless of the amount given.
4. Taxpayers who cannot finish their taxes by April 15 should request an extension by Tuesday. The extension allows you to file your return by October 15, 2008. Apply for the extension online at www.irs.gov. Any tax you owe must be estimated and paid with your extension application.
MIDNIGHT MAIL COLLECTION SITES
Taxes must be postmarked with the date of April 15.
The following U.S. Post Offices will offer midnight mail collections Tuesday: the city’s main post office on Twin Rivers Drive, Dublin’s main post office, the Grove City retail unit, the Pickerington post office and the Westerville main post office.

G ov. Deval Patrick’s $1.35 million book deal, cemented in the closing hours of the casino debate, is sparking comparisons to Corner Office predecessors who bolted the Bay State for national jobs instead of staying put to fight for political priorities.
Patrick faced a torrent of criticism yesterday after acknowledging that he traveled to New York last Thursday to pursue a book contract rather than standing fast with lawmakers who put their necks on the line for his ill-fated casino proposal.
All coverage within BostonHerald.com from the last 7 days remains free of charge. Articles do not always include original photos, charts or graphics.
Some analysts suspect Gov. Deval Patrick, who left the Bay State last week during a crucial casino vote, has no plans to run for a second term.

Wm. Penn / Daily Yomiuri Columnist
Yes, that’s Toshiyuki Nishida sporting a long, straggly gray pony tail and a cowboy hat but we are not out west somewhere. The morning serial from western Japan, Chiritotechin, with its tongue twister title and tepid sub 20 percent ratings, has finally departed.
Its replacement Hitomi (Mondays-Saturdays, 8:15 a.m., NHK-G or 7:45 a.m., BS-2) is the story of reclaiming and rebuilding a family on the reclaimed island of Tsukishima in Tokyo Bay. We are back in good old down home shitamachi now, where, as the TV stereotypes go, the ninjo (warm human feeling) is thicker than the humidity.
While Katsutaro (Nishida) may look like shitamachi’s answer to country singer Willie Nelson, he will have to change his tune if he is to win back his estranged daughter Momoko (Naoko Iijima).
Seventeen years have passed since father and daughter had a major falling out. They haven’t spoken since, although Momoko’s mother did travel north to Sapporo for secret annual visits. Now she has died suddenly and the divorced Momoko and her daughter, aspiring dancer Hitomi, 20, (Nana Eikura), head south for the funeral. Eventually, they will stay on to help Dad with the three foster kids he has taken in–one abandoned, one abused and one neglected. Reuniting the family will not be easy, but Hitomi, who quelled a major battle between her mother and grandfather at the end of episode one by yelling “shut up” in English, looks like a heroine with the moxy to do the job. She’ll have the help of a strong supporting cast including veteran character actress Kin Sugai as Ume. Worth checking out.
The most unusual part of episode one of Hitomi was the decision to give us two minutes of the story and an eye-opener before the introductory theme song. No sooner had the NHK morning news ended than a bare leg was poking out at us from an aesthetics salon tanning machine. The intro, when it did appear, was nice enough but nothing compared to the stunningly beautiful intro for Atsuhime, NHK’s 2008 Sunday night historical drama. Now that series is definitely worth tuning in at least once just to see the intro. Aoi Miyazaki is good as Atsuhime, the princess from the Kyushu region who finally arrived in Edo last Sunday night but NHK will have to work hard to recreate life in the palace’s women’s quarters as well as the Fuji TV network did with their excellent Ooku series.

As April 1 approaches, prudent observers will be on the lookout for the media’s latest hoaxes. Last year, in anticipation of April Fools’ Day, Jack Shafer offered advice on how to avoid becoming the victim of the media’s shenanigans.
April Fools’ hoaxes succeed because the victims, conditioned by a stream of implausible but true stories in the press, aren’t expecting the sucker punch. If you don’t want to be anybody’s fool this year, assume a guarded crouch, especially as the countdown to April 1 progresses. Some April Fools’ Day pranks arrive in your mailbox a couple of days before the holiday in the form of a monthly magazine. Remember, to be forewarned is to be forearmed.
Beware strange animals. If a story whiffs even remotely of the hotheaded naked ice borer, it’s likely to be a hoax. Technology Review hoaxed its readers with an April Fools’ story in 1985 titled “Retrobreeding the Woolly Mammoth.” In 1984, the Orlando Sentinel did the same with a piece about the cockroach-devouring Tasmanian mock walrus. In 1994, London’s Daily Star sports pages reported that invading superworms might destroy the Wimbledon green.
Turn off your radio. Deejays love to pull practical jokes on April Fools’ Day. In 1989, KSLX-FM in Scottsdale, Ariz., broadcast the claim that the station had been taken hostage by Pima Indians, prompting calls to the police. WCCC-AM/FM in Hartford, Conn., told listeners on April 1, 1990, that a volcano had erupted not far away. San Diego’s KGB-FM alerted listeners on April 1, 1993, that the space shuttle Discovery had been rerouted from Edwards Air Force Base to a local airport. Thousands showed up to view the landing despite the fact that the spacecraft was earthbound that day. It’s not just shock jocks pulling the pranks—you can’t trust NPR, either. Its “humorists” have aired pieces on portable zip codes you can take with you when you move (2004), federal health care for pets (2002), and advertisements projected onto the moon (2000).
