Movie Studios Expand Into Virtual Web Worlds

Published by Derren under Uncategorized

NEW YORK With fewer bodies in movie theaters and consumers migrating en masse to digital formats, Hollywood studios are understandably keen to reach their market in new, hopefully more effective ways. Although virtual worlds have a spotty record so far, some studios clearly see great potential in these environments for both promotion and distribution of their output.
In April, Viacom’s Paramount Digital Entertainment signed a partnership agreement with Makena Technologies, making thousands of movie clips from the Paramount movie library available on There.com, an online virtual world. Visitors who purchase the clips can use them to communicate with others by having their avatar “speak” lines from movies while the actual clip plays in a small window. Links allow users to purchase DVDs of the featured movies.
Sony and Warner Bros. have both struck deals with Gaia Online, a hybrid virtual world and social network. The deals make available selected television programs from Sony’s library and films from the Warner Bros. archive. The agreements also saw Sony and Warner Bros. put some money into Gaia. A representative from Time Warner, the parent of Warner Bros., said the move falls in line with company strategy: to invest in companies with “great potential.”
Lewis Henderson, svp of the digital media business at the William Morris Agency, said, “Film companies are seeing that these virtual worlds are places that young people go to and spend a lot of time in. They are attractive as new networks, new destinations, new eyeballs for them.”
For Derek Broes, svp of the new business group at Paramount Digital Entertainment, assessing the virtual landscape wasn’t difficult.
“We don’t look at it as how many people are there. We look at them as interesting growth platforms — and we feel that there’s promise in it. You have to get involved, you have to explore and invest and go where the consumer is. We can no longer sit back and say we are going to put our content here and expect the consumer to follow,” he said.

Indie Film Production Offers Free Gas for Studio Distribution Deal

Published by Becca under Uncategorized

(OPENPRESS) May 26, 2008 — Jesulu Productions announced today that it will buy one-thousand gallons of gasoline for the movie studio that purchases domestic theatrical distribution rights to its new suspense-comedy feature film, Lady Magdalene’s.
“We’re making this offer during Memorial Day weekend,” said Jesulu’s CEO, J. Neil Schulman, who also wrote, directed, and plays a supporting role in Lady Magdalene’s, “when even the major studios are feeling the pinch of increased gasoline prices as they roll out their summer blockbusters. If you’re in charge of the studio delivering prints of the new Indiana Jones movie to over 8000 screens, you’re well aware that filling up the gas tank can run up those distribution costs quickly.”
This is not the first time Jesulu Productions has engaged in non-traditional tactics to achieve a distribution deal for Lady Magdalene’s. While still in post-production they offered the film’s distribution rights for sale on eBay; however, no bids were received.
“We just didn’t fit into either studio or independent marketing categories,” said Schulman. “We aim to entertain a mass audience like studio blockbusters costing 500 times what we spent on production, but our micro-blockbuster is upbeat and feel-good, which disqualified us from most of the major film festivals. Who knew you needed to make a downbeat movie about a dysfunctional Inuit family whose lesbian daughter is molested by a Haliburton executive to get into Sundance?” Schulman asked.
Lady Magdalene’s was awarded “Best Cutting Edge Film” following its premiere at the 2008 San Diego Black Film Festival February 2nd, and was received enthusiastically by a large audience during its April 3rd screening at the Backlot Film Festival in Culver City.
In the title role of Lady Magdalene the film stars Nichelle Nichols, the iconic actress who played “Uhura” on the original Star Trek, as well as being a singer discovered at age 16 by Duke Ellington. Beginning in Fall 2007, Nichelle Nichols began appearing as “Nana Dawson,” a recurring player on the NBC blockbuster television series, Heroes. As well as starring in Lady Magdalene’s, Nichelle Nichols contributed her talents behind the camera as choreographer, and composer of two original songs for the film, which she performed as well.

Free Will Astrology: May 21 through 27

Published by Donna under Uncategorized

Listen to MP3s, read the lyrics, or buy the cd, Give Too Much.
ARIES [March 21–April 19] After working for years in various jobs at San Francisco TV station KTVU, Frank Sommerville was promoted to the top of the heap—lead anchorman of the 10 o’clock news program. He promised that his new power wouldn’t make him lazy or complacent. “Nobody will out-curious me,” he bragged. I hope you will adopt the same motto for the foreseeable future, Aries. Your world needs you to be intensely inquisitive about what’s transpiring. Uncoincidentally, asking lots of smart questions (and even some dumb ones) will also be the best possible thing you can do for your mental health.
TAURUS [April 20–May 20] “The Irish don’t know what they want and are prepared to fight for it,” said British attorney Sidney Littlewood. I don’t endorse that assertion, but I want it to create a cautionary message for you: Make sure that in the upcoming weeks, no one can say the same thing to you. I hope you aggressively champion an idea you believe in, but you should get clearer about exactly what it is.
GEMINI [May 21–June 20] Giuseppe Rebaudi and Silvie Basain started dating in 1952. This year, they finally decided to take the next step. After a 56-year courtship, the 101-year-old Italian man wed his 98-year-old girlfriend. I predict that a comparable event will bless your love life in the second half of 2008, Gemini. Some romantic development that has been in the works for a long time will finally ripen into its full expression. Expect news about this soon.
CANCER [June 21–July 22] If you’re normal, you periodically feel little surges of anger that you don’t express. Over time, they may accumulate into a mass of blind rage that can hurt innocent bystanders, damage your relationships, and tempt you to punch holes in walls. The way to keep this from happening is my patented Laughing Tantrum Release Therapy, a five-minute ritual that you perform once a week in a private place. For four minutes, you fume, seethe, curse, and yell. For the final 60 seconds, you compel yourself to laugh uncontrollably. This week would be an excellent time to start integrating Laughing Tantrum Release Therapy into your routine.

Free Iced Coffee

Published by Pattie under Uncategorized

Is this an example of product placement. I love dunkins coffee with a little skim milk, but this seems like an advertisment to me.
Nope, I’m just an iced coffee enthusiast. All paid content is labeled.
Diabetes juice. Well, in your case, more like genius juice, if it keeps you crackin’ with awesome terms like that.
For those of you digging freebies today, Mickey Dee’s is giving away a free chicken sandwich with the purchase of a medium drink.
For only $1.50 you can get a marginally-tasting chicken by-product.
I just got my free iced coffee and chicken sandwhich. YUM.

Halo 3 Heroic Map Pack to become free Tuesday

Published by Laz under Uncategorized

I still think the pack was worth $10 bought it day one. Enjoy it for free!
That aside, I’m pretty excited about this. I can’t wait for standoff rocket race.
Standoff is by far the best of these maps. It is intense for shotty snipers, and since there isn’t a sniper in the default config, it makes for great flag, bomb, VIP and Slayer games.
I’m also excited about foundry being available to everyone, because that means that a double XP weekend featuring cool foundry forgeries is most likely coming sometime soon. Finally.
I still wonder if I’m even gonna buy these maps. The DLC hoppers were hit and miss for me … a lot of quitters and idiots. I may wait for them to be free. And to the guy who said they’d be free April 15th … yeah right dude.
I thought about the same thing…. Why cant they have 5 - 6 different foundry lay outs now. people have make 1000’s of them, why cant bungie take 5 - 6 of them and put them into the game.
It’ll happen Marty. Keep the faith brotha!!!
But remember, while there are certain to be a few gems out there, I’m sure that there’s also A LOT MORE CRAP and it’ll take time to sift through it all.
Maybe a special weekend long tournament with a half dozen different maps? Or go really crazy and find/compile two dozen kick ass variants and make an entire hopper just for Foundry crap.
I’m sure they’ve already thought of this too. Feasibility may be another story alltogether….
Okay, it’s Tuesday (9:43 AM Eastern Time Zone), but the 800 MS Point cost is still on the Heroic Map Pack. Is there a particular moment in when this “free” event is suppose to begin?

Free Tibet like you freed Kosovo

Published by Lashay under Uncategorized

Every now and then in the messy quagmire that is diplomacy and international relations, the true hypocrisy of all this jostling for national position becomes glaringly obvious. Lightly camouflaged behind a veneer of garish moral make-up and far from the bright lights of CNN and the BBC, the diplomatic whores and pimps of our world’s nations ply their trade.
March 10 2008 is the 49th anniversary of the Tibetan national uprising against Chinese occupation, supported clandestinely and unsurprisingly by the CIA (has there been a single revolution where these nosy fellows were not involved?). All around the world there are marches to free the beleaguered country from Chinese rule, but China will not budge on its position and the world stops short of doing anything more about it except to march and protest and arrange for meetings between spiritually barren Hollywood stars and the Dalai Lama, who uses them for photo opportunities for his cause.
Way across on the other side of Europe, the pimps have been rather busier of late on a more conveniently soluble, accolade-earning problem. Backed by a paternal dose of US and EU support, young Kosovo has just announced its independence from Serbia. Unlike Tibet, Kosovo is not an invaded country ruled by Serbs. It is formally, and now I guess formerly, an official province of Serbia with an ethnic Albanian population that has in recent history rapidly increased in number to become the dominating ethnicity of the formerly majority Serb province. After the reversal of Milosevic’s ethnic cleansing debacle, the Albanians now number about 90% of the population in part due to a wave of Serbian refugees that left for other parts of Serbia after the war.

Free Puzzle Games

Published by admin under Uncategorized

With just the kids coming back from last season on the roster, Lancaster Mennonite's girls' basketball team was going to be pretty good this year.
And then Erin LaVenice showed up.
The 6-0 sophomore center transferred from Hempfield to Mennonite last summer. And she turned out to be the last piece of the Blazers' championship puzzle.
"Erin," Mennonite coach Sherri Gorman said, "was able to take us from being a good team, to being a great team."
A team that raised the District 3 Triple-A championship gold trophy Saturday afternoon in the Giant Center after putting the clamps on defensively in a 37-27 victory over Gettysburg for the first district title in school history.
And LaVenice, the Blazers' super sub and low-post dynamo, was a big reason why Mennonite got there — let alone won it — in the first place.
Gorman, the Blazers' third-year coach, didn't say much about LaVenice early on. She was still a secret weapon back in the first couple of weeks this season.
I remember chatting with Mennonite's coach on Dec. 14, prior to the Blazers' L-L crossover game at Lampeter-Strasburg, and she mentioned that LaVenice dunks Nerf basketballs in practice.
That got my attention.
And then LaVenice went out and dropped a career-high 17 points on L-S — in a 57-48 loss — and suddenly her name was out there.
More big games followed:
She scored 23 points in a win over Lebanon Catholic; pumped in 25 points in a gut-wrenching overtime loss to Lancaster Catholic; 16 points against Lancaster Catholic in the one-game playoff for the section title, won by Mennonite; 21 points in an OT win over Cedar Crest in the league semifinals.
And she scored a team-high 10 points in the district final.
The bigger the game, the better she was. And that secret-weapon tag? Long gone.
"We know that if we get the ball inside to Erin," Mennonite senior guard Melissa Sauder said, "she's going to finish. As the season has gone on, she's become more and more important to our team."
That was evident Saturday.
Gettysburg was hanging around early, and led 6-5 when Gorman sent LaVenice to the scorer's table. On the Blazers' first trip with her in the game, LaVenice took an entry pass, spun, went up in traffic and attempted a sweet baby hook. Bang. Mennonite led 7-6, and never trailed again.
"When Erin comes in the game, we go up in intensity and pressure," Gorman said. "She provides such a nice lift off the bench. And she loves coming off the bench. She loves the seniors. She has no ego problem. She has no issues."
Just plenty of energy. The game changes when LaVenice comes in. Gorman usually starts four guards, and after the opposition chases them all over the place for the first three or four minutes, in comes LaVenice with her shot-blocking skills and penchant for crashing the glass.
She is a match-up nightmare.
"She's got the size, she's got the long reach and she's got the moves," Gorman said. "She's also greener than green. And she has unlimited potential. She even does things in practice that she hasn't shown in games yet. She's got a bright future."
"Sometimes we forget she's a sophomore," Mennonite senior forward Mary Poole said. "And it's not like if you're a senior, you're better than a sophomore. We don't look at it that way. She's earned her spot on this team."
She knows her role well, too: First non-guard off the bench. And come in flying — find a mismatch in the post, rebound, alter shots, provide a spark.
And if all else fails, clog the middle and let Mennonite's playmakers take over.
"In today's world, you see so many bigger players who want to go out to the 3-point line and knock down 3's," Gorman said. "With Erin, she wants to own the paint. She knows that job needs to be done. Her inside presence, with our guard game, gives us a solid inside-outside game.
"Our guards can dribble-penetrate, but they can also spread the court and isolate Erin inside."
And more times than not, when LaVenice gets her hands on the ball, she scores. Or she gets fouled and gets free throws. And if she misses, she's a terror on the offensive glass.
"Erin comes in off the bench and she changes the whole aspect of the game," Poole said. "She's so tall. Not many people can guard her. … She's been playing so well for us."
Particularly in the postseason, where LaVenice is averaging 12.1 points in Mennonite's eight playoff games.
The Blazers' holdovers probably had the goods to make a nice playoff run this season.
Then LaVenice showed up, completing the puzzle — a gold-plated puzzle for Mennonite.
