Country singer Sara Evans, 37, who finalized a bitter divorce last year, is engaged to former University of Alabama quarterback Jay Barker, 35, Evans’ publicist said Tuesday. No date has been announced for the wedding. Barker, who’s also divorced, has four children; Evans has three.
Picture of a past life
A nude photo of France’s first lady, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, will be auctioned off at a sale next month in New York City, an auction house said. The image was taken by photographer Michel Comte in 1993, when Bruni-Sarkozy was one of the world’s most sought-after models. In the black-and-white photo, she strikes a pigeon-toed pose, her hands covering her crotch. An official at French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s office declined Tuesday to comment on the April 10 sale, saying it concerned the leader’s private life.
McQueen heirs sue
Heirs of actor Steve McQueen filed a lawsuit Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Manhattan in an attempt to stop apparel manufacturer Belstaff USA from using McQueen’s name and likeness to promote its jackets, coats and such without their consent. Chadwick McQueen and The Terry McQueen Testamentary Trust say in the lawsuit that McQueen’s name and likeness have been ripped off by Belstaff USA. Steve McQueen starred in classics such as “Bullitt” and “The Great Escape” and died at 50 in 1980.
Hal Riney, 75, the Seattle-born copywriter who helped build San Francisco into a creative center for advertising with low-key, upbeat campaigns for Saturn cars, Bartles & Jaymes wine coolers and the re-election of President Reagan (”It’s morning again in America”), died of cancer Monday at his home in San Francisco.
Today in History
1917: The Seattle Metropolitans became the first U.S. hockey team to win the Stanley Cup as they defeated the Montreal Canadiens.
1971: East Pakistan proclaimed its independence, taking the name Bangladesh.

There’s somethign weird about this… you’d think the story about China requesting to plant its troops inside our borders would be big news… but I’ve just done a browse of the major australian news sites - and I can’t find it on the front page of any of them (unless I’m blind) - what’s going on?

“This is the kind of impertinence up with which I shall not put.”It’s a misconception that ending a sentence with a preposition is strictly ungrammatical.
